Where can I download an anti-virus software without downloading a virus?

I’m getting a new computer soon because my current one has had too many viruses and stuff and well I want to be better prepared for my new computer and get anti-virus software, but I’m scared I would download a virus, can someone lead me in the right direction and tell me what to download, and if you have downloaded it before and is why you know its not a virus, much help appreciated, THANKS!

Here’s a list of some popular and free AV programs:

Microsoft Security Essentials: <— my first choice among the free ones!

Avast: <— my 2nd choice among the free ones!

Avira: <— my 3rd choice among the free ones!

BitDefender:

Comodo: <— Has a free AV too but it’s still not considered as one of the best AV. However, it’s my 1st choice for the free firewall feature which is superb!

AVG: <— ah forget that I mentioned this. It’s slow in updating their malware definitions.

Also, install either Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware or SuperAntiSpyware to supplement your AV:

MBAM and SAS are not AV but dedicated anti-spyware programs. However, they work great against trojans and malware that most AV programs can’t detect or remove. Both have free versions too but I highly recommend that you get the paid versions which offer real-time scanning and blocking of malicious websites. Nowadays, you shouldn’t be using a computer without an antivirus AND a dedicated antispyware program.

NOTE: Never use more than one AV program at a time as it can cause severe performance and system instability issues. Whatever AV and antispyware program you choose, make sure that they are always updated and your firewall is always on.

If you want a better (and still free) firewall other than the built-in Windows firewall, you can choose either Comodo or ZoneAlarm:

Google has a really good free anti-virus….http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer.html…they are a corporation with way too much money…while many other anti-virus developers are making new viruses just to push their product…http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/145/fantasy-island.html

In summary of the long article:

"Either way, any assets McAfee has moved to Belize will likely remain out of Fleming’s reach — especially since he has taken the step of becoming a permanent resident there. "A judgment in the States is not valid down here," McAfee tells me. "And lawsuits in process in the United States have a difficult time in the collection stage.""

With computer security, you basically get what you pay for. People swear by AVG Free; but I’ve never seen avg free tell someone their computer doesn’t have a virus. I don’t know a better security than Norton. If you buy the Norton 360, you can use it on 3 computers. So I went in with 2 other people and paid 16 dollars for a year of security. Norton 360 protects you in all aspects.

If I were you, Enable first your firewall before browsing the internet, I helps a lot esp in detecting malicious softwares, and then i am suggesting that you go directly to the website of the antivirus you wanted to download like if you prefer avast, avg, avira, etc… then just go directly to their respected sites.
