What virus software package should I get?

I have norton internet security which is going to expire soon. The new software costs £50+ which I don’t want to spend.

Does the free virus software you can get on the internet really work?

Yes, a very good, free AV available to download is AVG 8 Anti-virus:

And for any spyware problems, get SpyBot – Search and Destroy:

Both are free, as powerful as paid programs, such as Norton and McAfee, and don’t use up as many resources.

Good Luck.

You could try some of the freebies on this site.

Or your local pc world should normally have a deal on norton, mcafee or kapersky which are all good. And yes the free software does work and it works really well, that’s why millions of people download and use it every day. You may not get the support with it that you get with paid for software but I’ve never had a problem with avg or avast. And the good thing about it that it doesn’t cost you a penny to try and find out for yourself.

AVG, Avast, and Avira all have excellent free antivirus software.

When you get ready to change, you’ll need this to get rid of that pesky Norton:

I recommend having these programs handy also:

just switch to a linux distro and forget using antivirus software unless all your friends use windoze and you don’t want to spread viri amoung them that won’t affect your system. to date there are no known viri in the wild that affect linux distros.

I will tell you that I KNOW that AVG has been known to let a virus through.
And Zone Alarm conflicts with many programs.

Here is FREE program that you need. It is VERY reliable, and will serve you well.

I like this FREE tool that does an EXCELLENT job.

    Avast free Home Edition
    Get it here:
    http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.ht...

And please do a "thorough" scan as soon as you get it downloaded. The user interface is simple. Click the left side, and in the top menu that comes up, select thorough scan.

When it finds a culprit it throws up an alarm, then you DELETE the culprit, (do not quaranteen).

Then allow it to run all of the time, and you will be completely protected. It will "automatically" update itself, also for free.
You only need to renew your registration once a year, also free.

Note: I know of several people who have used AVG and gotten a virus anyway.
I’ve tried them all, and have had wonderful results with this one for the last 5 years.

I have been looking at the answers already posted. Norton is very resource intensive and difficult to remove without the norton removal tool downloaded from their site. Avg free is excellent but you only get ant-virus. I use avg security suite for which i pay an annual subscription and get a three pc license. ( check it out). Remember, no security software is 100% perfect. Run three different spy-ware programs and they will all report differently. As a customer of BT-Yahoo, I have the option of using the full Norton security suite for free. I don’t and I wouldn’t
