What is the best anti virus software to date?

I have heard of BitDefender, Viper, Norton, and Mccafee. I have BitDefender it crashes on me every once and a while. So does anyone have opinions on other anti virus software?
We’ve used Norton antivirus (by Symantec) with success for a number of years. We used a free program before that, but got a virus anyway – so switched to a pay program. It’s covered us well all this time and I use a Norton coupon http://www.discountspies.com/norton-coupons/ to help defray the cost.
